Macbeth

Act one

Act 1 Scene 1

Characters: Three Witches

Location: A deserted place

Time: Before the battle has ended

Events: The three witches plan to confront Macbeth without his knowledge on top of the heath when the battle has ended

Quote: “Fair is foul, and foul is fair”

 

Act 1 scene 2

Characters:

Location: A military camp near Forres

Time: The end of the battle

Event: A wounded Soldiers returns from battle and tells the story that Macbeth won against Macdonwald and Rosse informs them that Norway have come to battle

Quote: “As sparrows eagles, or the hare the lion”

 

Act 1 scene 3

Characters: 3 witches, Macbeth, Banquo

Location: On top of the heath

Time: When the battle has been won and lost

Event: Macbeth and Banquo are unexpectedly greeted by the witches on top of the heath where they declare Macbeth is to become king and Banquo’s sons will also become kings. Macbeth and Banquo are both in shock but soon accept this as a reality.

Act 1 scene 4

Characters: Duncan, Malcolm, Macbeth, Banquo, Rosse and Angus

Location: Forres, a room in the king’s palace

Event: Duncan (the king) gets information from Malcolm that Cawdor has been killed. Macbeth enters and seconds this comment. Duncan announces that his oldest son, Malcolm, will now be Prince of Cumberland and there for taking over Duncan as King when the time comes. Macbeth is in denial about this declaration and will plot to change this.

Quote: “stars, hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires” – Macbeth to the audience after the announcement on the prince of Cumberland

 

Act 1 scene 5

Characters: Lady Macbeth, Messenger, Macbeth

Location: A room in Macbeth’s castle

Time: the battle has ended and Macbeth is to return home

Event: Lady Macbeth receives a letter from Macbeth starting he is to become king, She fares that he does not hold the courage to kill  King Duncan himself so takes it upon herself to step into the role of ‘male’ and is prepared to kill him herself when he comes to visit their castle for the night.

Act 1 scene 6

Characters: Duncan, Banquo, Lady Macbeth

Location: A room in Macbeth’s Castle

Time: As the King arrives at the castle

Event: king Duncan arrives and Macbeth’s castle, Duncan praises the castle and thanks, Lady Macbeth for the invite and her warm hospitality

Quote:”Conduct me to mine host: we love him highly” – Duncan, King Duncan is talking about how highly he speaks of Macbeth

 

Act 1 scene 7

Characters: Macbeth, Lady Macbeth

Location: A room in Macbeth’s castle

Time: As Duncan arrives at Macbeth’s castle

Event: Macbeth ponders on the idea of killing King Duncan and goes off the idea. The reasons being: going to hell, being a good king and being a good friend. Lady Macbeth is outraged at this and has to come to the realization that she may definitely have to kill King Duncan to have Macbeth as King, Lady Macbeth reveals the plan that they will have to carry out and that the servants will be framed for this gruesome act. Macbeth then agrees to go through with the plan after being called a coward by his ambitious wife.

Quote: “Bring forth men-children only!” – Macbeth, he is stating that his wife is only to give birth to boys because of her courage

 

 

Act Two

 

Act 2 scene 1

Characters: Banquo, Fleance, and Macbeth

Location: A court within Macbeth’s castle

Time: After Midnight

Event: Macbeth has finally found the courage to kill King Duncan. Banquo reveals that he had a dream last night about “3 weird sisters”, referring to the whiches. Just as Banquo and Fleance leave, Macbeth has a vision on a dagger floating before him. He can not touch this floating weapon but can clearly see it without taking hold of it. He can picture the dagger with clots of blood on the end and quickly makes for Duncan’s bedroom.

Quote: “Is this the dagger I see before me” – Macbeth, claiming he can see a floating dagger in front of him that he can not clasp.

 

Pathetic Fallacy

When the natural world or setting appears to respond to/reflect the human events

 

Act 2 scene 2

Characters: Lady Macbeth, Macbeth

Location: A court within Macbeth’s castle

Time: After midnight

Event: Lady Macbeth has completed her job by composing all the servants. She doubts Macbeth can carry out his duty of killing the king but cannot understand how he could fail with this scheme. Macbeth emerges with his hands bedaub in blood. he states he heard the chamberlains awake and say their prayers before going back to bed. He also adds as he killed the King he heard a voice call out “sleep no more, / Macbeth does murder sleep”, vanishing Macbeth from murder because of the terrible treason he just committed. Lady Macbeth then becomes

Act 2 scene 3

Characters: Porter, Macduff, Lenox, Macbeth

Location: A court within Macbeth’s castle

Time: The night after the kings’ death

Event: Macduff and Lenox come to the castle to see King Duncan and awaken him from his slumber. The porter greets them at the door telling the of the great party with the king last night and of how drunk he became. Macduff and Lenox stop with Macbeth and tell him how the night has been unruly, chimneys have been blown down and strange screams of death have been heard in the air. Macbeth knows this is a consequence of killing the King but can not share this information. This is told as Macduff has left to wake King Duncan; he returns in absolute horror with seeing king Duncan Lying dead on the bed. this information shocks Lenox as he is in disbelief at the start, Macbeth plays along as he pretends to be devastated. Macbeth, acting, with such rage, kills both guards so they can not stick up for themselves but tells the others that they were part of it. Lady Macbeth enters and gets informed with the news she already knows about, the Kings has been murdered. She acts devastated, shocked and even pretends to faint. As she is carried off, a side not with Donalbain and Malcolm id revealed. they will be going there separate ways, Malcolm to England and Donalbain to Ireland. They will be the most likely suspects so will journey on to stop being impressed.

Quote: “There are daggers in men’s smiles; the near in blood, the nearer bloody.” – Donalbain to Malcolm, this states that they can not even trust their friends as they are the most likely suspects.

 

Act 2 scene 4

Characters: Old man, Rosse, Macduff

Location: Outside the castle

Time: The morning after Duncans death

Event: the old man talks about how he has never seen devastation like this in his whole life, It should be light out, but it’s dark like night. Duncan’s horses turned on humans then started to eat each other. It is thought the guards killed the king but were instructed to do so by Donalbain and Malcolm as they are next in line to the thrown. It is told Macbeth will now become king, and all this has taken place overnight.

Quote: “Thou seest, the hevans, as troubled with man’s act,” – Rosse

 

Act 3

 

Act 3 scene 1

Characters:

Location: A room in a palace

Time: Unknown

Event: Macbeth decides that Banquo and his son must be killed. They are benefiting as much as he is from killing king Duncan but did nothing to deserve this reward. They will be killed by two murderers when they have returned from their ride.

Act 3 scene 2

Characters: Lady Macbeth, Servant, Macbeth

Location: The castle

Time: Unknown, before night

Event: Lady Macbeth is not satisfied with being Queen, the thought was much better than the real thing. Macbeth is still worrying and knows they are not safe yet. Macbeth is not going to tell Lady Macbeth that he is going to get Banquo and his son killed but she knows he is going to do something to tell. Macbeth says now that he has done one bad thing he has to back it with more, he is potentially saying he has gone to the dark side.

Quote: “What’s done is done” – Lady Macbeth, Telling Macbeth not to worry saying the past is in the past and you can not go back

“O! full of scorpions is my mind, my dear wife” – Macbeth to Lady Macbeth, he is stating his mind has now been poisoned and it is becoming irritated with the thoughts and actions he is undergoing.

 

Act 3 scene 3

Characters: 3 Murderers, Banquo, Fleance

Location: A park with a road leading to the palace

Time: Night

Event: Banquo is killed by the murderers but his son Fleance escapes.

Event: Lady Macbeth and Macbeth hold a dinner party at the castle. Macbeth gets told from the murderer that Banquo’s been killed with twenty gashes on his head, but Fleance has escaped. Macbeth is relieved to hear about Banquo “T is better the without, than he within” and rather sees his blood out of his body than in. Macbeth goes to take a seat at the dinner party but soon realizes every seat is full because the g

Characters: 1 witch, Hecate (Cheif witch)

Location: the heath

Time: Upon the heath Witch 1 meets with Hecate, the goddess of witchcraft. Hecate is not happy the witches met with Macbeth without her knowledge

Act Four

 

Act 4 scene 1

Characters: 3 Witches, Hecate, Macbeth, Lenox

Location: A dark cave. In the middle, a boiling cauldron.

Time:

Event: The three witches are making up a cauldron out of rare objects gathered while the moon was in eclipses. These such items include witches mummy, the nose of turk, toe of a frog and the gall of a goat. As the position has been created Macbeth comes in and asks the witches to reveal the truth of their prophecies to him. Three apparitions appear consequently. Apparition one: an armed head, warning him of Macduff. Apparition two: a child covered in blood informing him that he can not be killed by anyone born of a woman. Apparition three: a child crowned with a tree in his hand, A great burn of wood has to move to the hill until Macbeth can be vanquished. There is a fourth apparition, a show of eight Kings with the final one with a mirror in his hand. There in Banquo’s ghost as the first one, then his children than his children’s children. Meaning even though Banquo is dead, his children and children’s children are still all going to become kings. As the witches dance around and disappear Lenox enters and informs Macbeth that Macduff has fled to England so Macbeth has the murderers to take over Macduff’s castle and kill his wife and children.

no one can kill Macbeth if they are born from a woman

 

Act 4 scene 2

Characters: Lady Macduff, Rosse, Son, Messenger, Murderer

Location: Macduff’s Castle

Time: Unknown

Event: Lady Macduff is told of her husband fleeing to England and is outraged that he left her and her children to fend for themselves from murder. She tells her son her husband is a traitor, “one that swears and lies”. The murders barge in and call the son an egg while stabbing him to death. Lady Macduff flees but we are left to the conclusions that she and the rest of her sons are murdered.

Act 4  scene 3

Characters: Malcolm, Macduff, Doctor, Rosse

Location: England, A room in the Kings palace

Time:

Event: Malcolm and Macduff hold a conversation outside King Edwards palace. This begins with Malcolm telling Macduff he does not trust his because he left his family to be killed by the murderers in England. Malcolm, the should be king, admits that he does not know if he would be fit to be the next King. He professes to be lustful, greedy and violent. He says that he would have sex with Macduff’s daughters, sister, wife, grandmother, and maids. At first, Macduff disagrees to be polite but soon he can not contain himself, he then agrees he would not be fit to take the throne. By saying this Macduff has passed the test that Malcolm set to see if he was loyal. Malcolm reveals the lies he has told and admits he has never had sex with a woman.

Ross comes in just having arrived from Scottland and lies about Macduff’s children and wife being well. He tells Malcolm he should return back to the

Act Five

 

Act 5 scene 1

Characters: Doctor, Gentle-Woman, Lady Macbeth

Location: A room in

Time:

Event: Lady Macbeth has been sleepwalking, talking and writing, while her Gentle-Woman is overhearing it all and has been observing. She brings her doctor in and they both watch over Lady Macbeth sleepwalking. She comes out and rubs her hands thinking there is blood all over them. They hear her speak that she and Macbeth have killed King Duncan and realize they have overheard something they should not have. The doctor can not fix it but has known people to recover from it. She then reveals that Banquo has been killed and she is wrapped in guilt. She needs god, not a doctor to help.

Quote: “Heres the smell of the blood still: all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh! oh! oh!” – Lady Macbeth, Wrapped in guilt she thinks that blood is covering her hands from the people she has caused to die.

 

Act 5 scene 2

Characters: Macbeth, Angus, Cathness, Lenox, Menteth

Location: The country near Dunsinane

Time:

Event: They are going to the wood that has to be moved before Macbeth can be killed.

Act 5  scene 3

Characters: Macbeth, Doctor, Attendants, Servant, Seyton

Location: Dunsinane, a room in the castle

Time:

Event: Ten thousand soldiers come to fight outsideMacbeth’s castle. His followers have turned against him and he is soon to have no one willing to fight alongside him. He is still under the impression that he is completely invincible, however, this is not the case, as the witches play tricks and deceive him while speaking in riddles. He is prepared to stand alone and fight as he still thinks he could win. Lady Macbeth is still unwell, not sleeping and hallucinating. Macbeth believes there should be a cure in medicine for her, but the doctor has no possible way of curing her yet. Macbeth also demands that there should be a medicine to receive all his supporters back, but the doctor can not perform and act like this and now regrets working for this demanding King.

Act 5  scene 4

Characters: Malcolm, Menteth, Macduff, Old Siward and his son, Cathness, Angus, Lenox, Rosse and Soldiers

Location: country near Dunsinane, Birnam wood in view

Time:

Event: The soldiers are going to cut down branches from the Birnam forest and approach Macbeth’s castle with them to concealing their numbers. We remember the witches prophesies saying he cannot die until the forest has been shifted.

Act 5  scene 5

Characters: Macbeth, Seyton, Soldiers, Messenger

Location: Dunsinane, within the castle

Time:

Event: Macbeth is still confident he will come up on top throughout this battle. As Seyton re-enters, he comes bearing the news of Lady Macbeth’s death. Macbeth is in disappear and tells that this is not the right time for this event to take place. Macbeth becomes furious with the messenger who tells that the forest is moving. He starts to second guess the witches and all that they have said.

Quote: “There would have been a time for such a word. – Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,” – Macbeth, his sorrow with the news of the death of his wife

 

Act  5 scene 6

Characters: Malcolm, Old Siward, Macduff and their army

Location: Dunsinabeforeefor the castle

Time:

Event: The soldiers progrees to the castle carrying trees. Malcolm orders the soldiers to throw down their boughs and draw their swords in preparation for battle.

Quote: “your leafy screens throw down, And show like those you are.” – Malcolm

 

Act 5 scene 7

Characters: Macbeth, Young Siward, Macduff, Siward

Location: A different part of the plain

Time:

Event: Macbeth begins to fight against the English army, his first kill, Yong Siward. He then disappears.

Quote: “They have tied me to a stake: I cannot fly, But, bear-like, I must fight the course.” – Macbeth

 

Act 5 scene 8

Characters: Macbeth and Macduff

Location: Another part of the plain

Time:

Event: Macbeth is still in belief that he can not be slortered. Macduff has come to face Macbeth and we remember that the witches said ‘beware Macduff’. Macduff reveals that he is not born of a woman, but cut out premature. Macbeth after saying he will now not fight, now is forced to because he does not want to be knowen and a coward. Macduff slays Macbeth, and the king has now be killed.

Act 5 scene 9

Characters: Malcolm, Siward, Rosse

Location: Within the castle

Time:

Event: Macduff enters with Macbeths head. He has killed him and it is told that Lady Macbeth killed herself. Malcolm is anounced king and order is restored.
